GUD – Magic Mirror, Spiegeltent

February 27

VOCALIST Ali McGregor made a dramatic entrance from a stage balcony to front a very accomplished backing trio of pianist Sam Keevers, bassist Lyndon Gray and drummer Hugh Harvey for her opener, the Michael Buble song, Feeling Good.

McGregor has a highly expressive, soul-tinged voice and an ability to hold very long high notes, due to her classical training. She began the program with the showpiece in a dramatic latin rhythm, Whatever Lola Wants.

She sang several songs from her album Alchemy, including Oops I Did it Again, and a sultry version of Cry Me a River, adding new verses, with some clever take-offs of vocalist Anastasia.

It’s unfortunate that this five-star performance was scheduled for one night only, as it would easily draw crowds for repeats.
